In honour of Indigenous History Month, we are launching the next stage of the Feather Dance project, on Saturday, June 19, 2021. All are welcome to join in this free online event.
Feather Dance is an Indigenous-led, Indigenous/settler/refugee collaboration in textile art and includes learning and relationship-building through storytelling, wisdom sharing, and community hand work. An embodied act of reconciliation in keeping with the call to build relationships of respect, authenticity, and transformation.
We are honoured to have Rikki Kooy as Indigenous mentoring elder, and lead artist and designer for the Feather Dance project. Remembering the children and subsequent intergenerational trauma inflicted by Residential Schools and broader oppression of Indigenous Peoples, focus is on healing pain of cultural oppression and suppression of Indigenous art, story, and spirituality.
The next stage of the project is entitled “Sacred Covering: Bearing Witness.” The vision is of a large work – a covering- accompanied by two “reconciliation poles.”
We will come together to honour Creator by celebrating culture and creative expression, so also bear witness to the hope of reconciliation. A significant part of the project was, and is, to bear witness and to remember the children, as we quietly work together.
Feather Dance has been an ongoing ministry at St. Hildegard’s Sanctuary for many years. Please visit our photo journal to witness the journey thus far.
